The Mysterious Affair at Styles
When Arthur Hastings visits his old friend, John Cavendish, he finds the atmosphere at John's family estate taut with tension. The cause of this tension is the second marriage of John's widowed stepmother, Emily Inglethorp. No one likes her new husband, especially her companion, Evelyn Howard. Then, when Emily Inglethrop dies from strychnine poisoning, scandal descends on the home, and Arthur Hastings calls on his friend Hercule Poirot to bring the murderer to justice.
Written during World War I and published in 1920, Agatha Christie penned her first detective novel
and made literary history when she introduced her sleuth Hercule Poirot.
