The Machine Stops

Our fall fundraiser is The Machine Stops, a dramatic presentation of E. M. Forster's short story.

Humanity has solved all social ills through complete reliance on centralized technology. Having greatly diminished earth's resources, people have retreated to underground networks of cities. Everyone lives alone in a fully-equipped room where they interact virtually with their thousands of friends.

At its technological apex, society has forgotten what it means to be human and an individual.

Written in 1909, Forster strikingly paints a plausible future, giving pen to concerns that haunt today's world as we grapple with the challenges of social media and technology and their affect on how we view ourselves and one another.

The Machine Stops, produced in the reader's theater style, is a fundraiser for our summer 2022 show.
